When an individual sustains injuries from a motor vehicle crash, spasm and muscle
splinting develop unequally on either side of the spine. This asymmetric muscle
spasm prevents the normal range of motion of the spine and misalignments occur
throughout the vertebral column. These misalignments need to be addressed via gentle
hands on manipulation or gentle low force instrument assisted manipulation.
What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is a constitution of symptoms collectively called Cervical Acceleration Deceleration Syndrome (CAD). Symptoms include neck pain and stiffness, shoulder pain, upper back pain, headaches, arm pain, arm numbness and sensory disturbances, and the development of trigger points and myofascial pain in the neck and upper back. CAD can also affect the lower back with similar pain and muscle tension.
CAD injuries most commonly occur with a rear impact collision at low speeds. Although our bodies are designed to handle forces of nature, the rear impact collision imparts a unique set of forces that our bodies are not made to handle and injury occurs. The combination of horizontal shear forces and cervical (neck) compression within 100-125 milliseconds results in injury to and failure to the tissues that naturally protect your spine.
