Why Chiropractic Care for an Auto Accident?

When an individual sustains injuries from a motor vehicle crash, spasm and muscle
splinting develop unequally on either side of the spine.  This asymmetric muscle
spasm prevents the normal range of motion of the spine and misalignments occur
throughout the vertebral column.  These misalignments need to be addressed via gentle
hands on manipulation or gentle low force instrument assisted manipulation.

What is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a constitution of symptoms collectively called Cervical Acceleration
Deceleration Syndrome (CAD).  Symptoms include neck pain and stiffness, shoulder pain,
upper back pain, headaches, arm pain, arm sensory disturbances, and the development
of trigger points in the neck and upper back.

CAD injuries occur with a rear impact at low speeds.  Although our bodies are designed to
handle some forces of nature, the rear impact collision imparts a unique set of forces that
our bodies are not made to handle and injury occurs.  The combination of horizontal
shear force and cervical compression within 100-125 seconds results in failure of the
tissues that naturally protect your spine.

Treatment

Unless you opted out of having med pay in your auto insurance, your auto insurance or
the responsible parties insurance will cover your office treatments at no additional out
of pocket expenses.

Why should you be concerned?

Some studies suggest that anywhere between 12% - 86% of whiplash victims will have
chronic pain for years after the initial automobile crash.

Why should you seek treatment immediately even if you are
not in pain?

It is not uncommon and is well documented in the literature that symptoms can present
long after the injury has occurred.  For instance, we have all at one point in our life
performed an activity where you did not immediately get sore, but days after the
offending activity symptoms appear.  The most important reason to seek treatment
immediately is to reduce the inflammatory response and limit tissue injury.  One study
found that in cases in which there was a delay in onset of more than 24 hours the
symptoms lasted nearly twice as long as the average.
